Types of Retaining Walls

Gravity Retaining Walls
Constructed from concrete, brick or stone, these walls use their own weight against the soil. They are supportive thus have to be heavy and thick. Due to their large size, they do not have to be reinforced. More so, they can actually reach 3 meters in height. These walls are mostly cast on site.

Reinforced Retaining Walls Exist in Two Categories:
  • Cantilever Retaining Walls
The main material used for construction of these walls is reinforced concrete. They have a stem and a base whereby the stem is thinner as compared to the wall’s base.

The base has two significant parts which are the toe and the heel. An advantage to these walls is that they are less costly when compared to gravity retaining walls and can either be precast in our warehouse or cast on site.

  • Counterfort Retaining Walls
Just like the cantilever walls, they are made of reinforced concrete but at their backside. They have concrete webs which we refer to them as counterforts. We prefer to use these walls to cantilever walls where the height required goes over 25 feet.

Building retaining walls is not an easy task. We have to construct them skillfully to avoid scenarios such as leaning of the wall, separation and worse toppling over. Water is among the causes of retaining wall failures. For this reason, the soil must be packed well enough to ensure no water seeps behind the retaining wall.

Soil compaction is an important process as improper compaction adds more unnecessary weight to the walls. This gives way to water seepage. There are building codes to retaining wall construction which we have to abide by.

Besides retaining wall construction, we also repair damaged retaining walls and rejuvenate the failing walls. Carmichael’s terrain necessitates the use of retaining walls in some of its regions. Call (916) 553-2299 now for free quotes and estimates.
