construction of retaining walls - (916) 553-2299

When it comes to constructing retaining walls, it is a complex process. Not only is the materials used for the retaining wall important, but the way that the joints and the foundation is designed is important as well. Without these pieces, you get a weak retaining wall which will break under pressure from the substances that the retaining wall is holding back vertically.

On this page, we will go through the process of constructing retaining walls. By knowing about the construction of the retaining wall, you will get an idea of the complex process that you have to go through to make this retaining wall. We won’t be able to cover every aspect of building the wall, but at least you will get a fundamental idea of how a retaining wall is built.

retaining wall design

The first part of building a retaining wall is to create a design. What the wall will look like is entirely dependent on the environment and the substances that the retaining wall will be forced to hold.

For example, let’s say that I want a retaining wall for my garden. I want this retaining wall to hold a body of dirt so that I can plant my vegetables and flowers in that area.

Since this is a retaining wall for a garden, I can go with a brick retaining wall with large stone bricks made to withstand the weight of dirt pressuring the wall. The retaining wall for my garden will cover the whole end of my garden facing the house and be a meter in width.

How you design the retaining wall is not just limited to visual aesthetics. You have to think about budget considerations, whether the retaining wall will meet the building codes and whether the retaining wall will serve its desired purpose.

This part should not be a problem though – you can go with a construction company to design the wall. Designing the retaining wall may sound complex, but with the right experts in place, you can get the design of the retaining wall done in no time.

This part should not be a problem. You can hire a construction company to do the work for you or you can get some locals to help you construct the retaining wall.

You should not attempt this job by yourself. Building a wall, especially a retaining wall, is labor intensive. Therefore, you should always seek help before building the retaining wall.

building the retaining wall

How you build the wall is entirely dependent on the materials used and the purpose of the wall. If you are building the retaining wall to hold back a reservoir of water, then you will need to construct the wall differently compared to a garden retaining wall. In this article though, we will discuss building three types of retaining walls – brick/mortar, stone and concrete walls; since these walls are the most popular types of retaining walls to create.

First off, you should always clear any existing plants or debris that will get in the way while you are building the retaining wall. You want a clean space while you are working on creating that retaining wall.

Once that is done, the footings and the foundations for the retaining wall need to be dug up. For all types of retaining walls; if you are building a wall on soil, then you need to fill the footings and foundations with gravel to prevent the retaining wall from sinking in the ground.

What comes next is dependent on how you want the wall to be constructed.

If you are creating a concrete wall, then you will have to create the forms needed to create the wall structure of the retaining wall. Mesh will need to be added to the concrete retaining wall to prevent cracking and extend the life span of the retaining wall.

Along with the construction of forms for the concrete retaining wall, you will have to construct the wall in sections i.e. create contraction joints in the retaining wall for every 4-6 feet to prevent cracking.

Then, once the concrete has been poured in the forms and has set, then you will have to leave the wall to set in the form for a number of days until it is okay to remove the forms. A drainage and waterproofing system will have to be installed for the retaining wall.

For the concrete retaining walls, you can add decorative features such as stamped patterns, use an acid stain or color hardener to color in the wall etc. That way, you can make that retaining wall look more interesting than it looks.

If, on the other hand, you are building a brick/mortar or stone wall; you do not have to worry about creating joints or creating forms. You still have to go through a similar process, but the results are the same.

The foundations for the brick/mortar and stone retaining wall has to still exist. Especially if the wall is situated on soil, then that is definitely necessary.

Then, the wall will be constructed using pegs and some string to ensure that you are building a perfect vertical retaining wall. Bricks/mortar and stone will be stacked on top of one another using cement mixture until the retaining wall is at the height required. No need to create extra joints. Just let the cement mixture set over a short period of time and then the wall is finished.

You will still have to install a water proofing and drainage system for a brick/mortar and stone wall.

Either way, no matter which type of wall that you build, the similar processes will need to be followed to construct an adequate retaining wall.

Our verdict.

No matter which situation that you need a retaining wall for, constructing the retaining wall is a difficult job. At least by reading this article, you have gained a fundamental understanding of how a retaining wall is made. That way, you will know what to expect next time you need to construct a retaining wall.
